Product-market fit

Product-market fit is the degree to which your product serves strong, sustained demand in the market. It is the point at which customers not only buy your product but genuinely need it, keep using it, and recommend it. For a growing company it is not a box you check once, but something that can grow stronger or weaker as your market and product change.

For a scale-up, product-market fit is decisive for your direction. If your fit is strong, then scaling up is the right move: delivering as much value as possible to a market that is asking for it. If your fit weakens, then growing hard is actually dangerous, because there is nothing more expensive and more disappointing than scaling up while demand slips out from under you. In that case, innovating is the better choice.

That is why a good scale-up audit measures two things at once: which phase you are in and how strong your product-market fit is. Together they determine what leadership and what systems you need right now, and whether you should scale up or innovate.
