Urgency
The feeling that acting now is unavoidable. Kotter's step 1: without urgency, people cling to the old ways. Combine hard facts (numbers, market trends) with an emotional charge (stories, loss).
Questions that help
- ·Which fact makes this inescapable?
- ·Which story touches people emotionally?
- ·What does doing nothing cost, concretely and visibly?
Example
'In Q3 our three largest customers told us they will switch if we do not integrate with X within 12 months. That is 40% of our revenue. Staying as we are means the business is no longer viable by year two.'
Common mistake
Manufacturing urgency ('we must transform!') without a concrete trigger. People see through that immediately.
